Unfortunately there is only one book available for Caucasian Ovtcharka on Amazon(there is an old book too but it is not in stock and is not going to be in).I ordered it a few minutes ago and I got excited,but it will arrive in 26-48 days. The day when I will buy my dog is coming up,and there are three alternatives for me for now: 1-CO 2-Great Pyrenees 3-BullMastiff But I want to buy the CO too much.The biggest problem is I am not sure if I can handle him while walking if he pulls with all his strength.Of course he will have training by me and a professional trainer,but in some situations he may disobey,and I should be able to handle him well in those situations. There is a Co in a yard of a house of a bunch of houses,and we are going to move to a house there in a few weeks.Maybe I may ask to his owner if I can take a walk with his Co,but the problem is I don't think the owner will allow me,even if he does it is impossible for the dog to allow me:)) Even if both of them allow I don't do cause I don't touch on a big foreign dog and COs are very suspicious of strangers:) [ Edited Fri Oct 23 2009, 06:11PM ] |

Here is something that may interest you. Crossposted ---- Hi folks, I know we have discussed Livestock Guardian dogs here and I always have to bring up my beloved "Beowulf" (of the lightbulb eating fame too, lol); anyway, the rescue he came from accidentally let one more litter happen (they got the male fixed and were scheduling the female, but she had puppies before they got her in) Anyway, wasn't going to mention them, as there are rescues involved, and these are nice, registerable, Caucasian Ovcharka puppies, BUT as it turns out, it's not so easy to place giant breed LGD puppies in responsible homes! The rescue has asked me to try to help, the puppies are 6 weeks old now (all females) and only 2 are placed. (They'd like to get them all in good homes in the 8-10 week range for proper family bonding) So there are 3 female Ovcharka puppies in need of GOOD homes. If you have ever considered getting a Livestock guardian breed, please consider one of these precious babies ! They are NOT for everyone, and you should have some experience handling dogs, but with good upbringing they are WONDERFUL dogs and will be able to protect you and your family and farm from predators as large as wolves and bear etc. Please COTHers, help, as the rescue is getting inquiries from large ranchers who want to put the pups out in the flock on thousand acres on their own - yeah, that's where the breed orginated, but you can see why it's kind of hard to place these lovely friendly little girls in such a harsh, non family oriented home. I'm sure a nice COTH farm owner would be a much better home, if only they want to experience having a dog big enough to put a pony saddle on, lol, and have the time and energy to train & socialize properly, these are the BEST dogs! Okay, sales pitch over - note this is a rescue, but I think they are hoping for a nominal donation, only to go to repairing/winterizing kennels etc (they rescue kuvasc, Analtolians, anything large & scary and the shelters call them, and they don't turn them away, they end up keeping the uadoptable ones themselves, so it's a valid canine rescue). PM or email me for more info on the breed, my Beowulf (he is their full brother) and 5 week old pics of the precious fluff balls Note rescue is in southern NJ and potential homes will be carefully questioned, we want to be sure you will know what you are getting into!
