| Caucasian as a pp dog | ||

It is clear from any experts that i talk to that the caucasian is second to none as a perimeter guard/ home guardian, however several well respected dog men i have spoken to in Europe have said that when dealing with real life protection scenarios away from the dogs home/ territory other dogs such as the Rottweillers, Presa Canario, German Shepherd crosses, Malis etc can be easier to control and can perform the task more effectively. I just wanted to get the opinion of those on this board as to the effectiveness of the CO as a pp dog. I am not saying this is my opinion. I just want to hear the viewpoint from CO enthusiasts. |

The independent nature of the CO is not suited for situations where it must respond to human direction. If you are walking in the city with lots of people you need another dog not the CO. If you fear for your life in a bad part of town or in the woods then you want a CO with you. The good pp dog will have good recall and obedience which can be a challenge in a selfdirected dog when it is in defensive mode. A CO in active defense mostly ignores you and take care of business. | ||

| Thanks Gary. The fact that the Ovcharka is a self thinking dog in many situations is something that i have found in discussions with dogmen who own this breed. It is certainly not a criticism of the breed. I feel that every breed has a tendency to respond to certain situations in a specific way. It is in understanding the balance of for example prey and defensive drive that we can capitalise most fully on the potential of every dog. |
