Hello! I am researching Caucasian Ovtcharkas and I have some questions in my mind. I am a thin male and I am afraid that if I own a Caucasian Ovtcharka,I may not have enough power to control-handle him well. They should be controllable with proper training, but in an emergency situation when my dog doesn't listen to me,I think it's too difficult to handle him.Are you able to handle your Caucasian Ovtcharkas easily, what about in emergency situations? Is it a must for a Caucasian Ovtcharka owner to be heavy-very strong(physical power)-muscular?I had a 45kg Rottweiler,I was able to handle him well,I was able to pull him back easily when he attacked a stranger(I was closing the garden gate when he first attacked, then I saw him and pulled his leash hard and pulled him back easily,in the next days I was more careful while I was closing the garden gate).I mean I was able to handle him in an emergency situation. But Caucasian Ovtcharkas seem like they are stronger/much stronger than a Rottweiler cause they are heavier/much heavier. Also I saw a video (on youtube) in which a thin male can't be able to control him while the dog was running after a car,he fell to the ground. Is it a must for a Caucasian Ovtcharka owner to be heavy-very strong(physical power)-muscular? |

Hi Jack, My opinion is that someone should be quite strong in order to handle a dog over 60kg specially refering to breeds like Caucasians or Fila brazileiro or Boerboels for 2 reasons. 1) You realize the strength of your dog when it really means to ...pull, ignoring your comands. Perhaps you will never understand the strength of your dog if we speak about a well-trained Rottie or GSD or Doberman etc., you mainly handle these dogs with your voice and less with physical power. Even your 45kg Rottie i believe you would not manage so easily if it was about another dog of same sex and your dog were not quite obedient, in a way that it would strongly resist against your will. 2) Specially for breeds like the ones I mentioned above we have a critical combination, which we should pay great deal of interest. Weight that often exceeds 60 or 70 kilos and these dogs do not excel in blind obedience (even for a well trained specimen there is strong possibility to refuse to obey in an active defence mode, because these dogs they have very pronounced instinct and they really think and judge on their own, that’s why exactly they make excellent guards without training. This can lead to an accident if the owner is not well educated about the breed instincts and behaviour. Lets say you assume your dog obeys you cause you taught him several commands since puppy hood and he really performs. Even as a 6 months puppy can reach 40-50kg so you assume again that you can control a dog of superior size but bear in mind that mentally still is a puppy. When 1+1/2 or more years old and logically your puppy reach maturity and so is natural for the breed to express aversion toward strangers even out of home (for some specimens this may be the case even as 4 of 5 month puppy) and then all of a sudden (with your point of view and your dog's) when at a walk down the street he attacks a passer by walking fast to your direction (a stranger perceived as an enemy by your dog feeling like he has to defend you at any cost even his life). If you ate not prepared for situations like this it may be dangerous. I have watched the video with them man on the ground when his Caucasian runs after the buss. Believe me even if the man was a lot bigger I believe he would still crawled on the ground, this dog should exceed 80kg. My Boerboel is 68kg and when in night out for a walk (i never risk it in a white day) if a passer by comes to my direction I change immediately direction if another one comes exactly the opposite direction I have to hold the leash with both hand using all my strength and my voice command. Still lots of times he can pull me couple of steps. If they get any closer (and that is around 10-15 meter from us) I have to warn the people that I have to tied the dog from a tree or steady pole before they pass by and of course i apologize. I am 1,83 cm tall and 98kg I use to work out with weights for over 12 years (i can still push 100kg on the bench press free weights with easy.) My dog will pay minimal interest to another dog (if it will not provoke him) and no interest for cats or birds, but any human been even a thin lady with very friendly disposition toward the dog is absolutely forbidden to get near. It’s not necessary to say that it is lot worst when in home (considered his own territory.) Train this dog to behave, make the mistake to assume that he will really obey every time when he is asked to do so and is very possible to end up with a very serious accident. When he make up his mind (and they really DO!!) that someone is a real threat nothing will hold him back not even electrical collar (many owners confess so). So what i am telling you this breed is not for you? NO!!!. (Of course the stronger you are the better for handling the dog) but I would say the same thinks even to a 140kg body builder (I really believe that a well bred dog out of these breeds with the proper size and character can pull any man (or men) at easy given he really means to do so) Its a combination of too many factors to responsibly own such a breed, like: Increase sense of responsibility by owning such a dog, good education for the breed specially for instincts - behaviour and active defence reaction, fair amount of money for fence when out in a yard, capability to imagine scenarios before you dog does or the other people, be always prepared for the unpredictable and be sure that you will definitely avoid..., because you are convinced that there is no way to correct when about a real situation in development, get know your dog's habits, train you dog as much as you can for obedience BUT NEVER RELY ON IT, have very good relation with your og make him to trust you as much as he can but BE SURE THAT YOU ARE THE LEADER, collect information from dog owners of same breed and try to find out as much as you can. Finally there are specimens that will not even bark at anyone even as an adult but believe me THIS IS NOT THE CASE FOR THESE BREEDS, if you are looking for such large dog with no protection instinct there are plenty of large breeds out there, just pick one (Saint Bernard, Newfoundlands, etc) Now the related questions arise, why to own such a dog from such a breed and here my personal opinion (as all above of course) is BECAUSE YOU WILL NEVER BELEIVE HOW MUCH YOU HAVE TO EARN AS RETURN. Hello Paul, thank you for posting. By the way, do you know Serge Hugal who is or was a CO breeder in Belgium about 40 minutes north of Brussels. I visited his kennel in 1999. Please also list your kennel in the breeders directory at this -link- Gary -link- -link- |
